What if the Lord had not been on our side? Let all Israel repeat: What if the Lord had not been on our side when people attacked us? They would have swallowed us alive in their burning anger. The waters would have engulfed us; a torrent would have overwhelmed us. Yes, the raging waters of their fury would have overwhelmed our very lives. Praise the Lord, who did not let their teeth tear us apart! We escaped like a bird from a hunter’s trap. The trap is broken, and we are free! Our help is from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.

Psalms 124:1‭-‬8 NLT

Have you ever had some insignificant detail send your mind reeling through time? Something as small as a whiff of perfume can pull you back in time to a happy or sad memory. Memories are powerful, and also call us into action. When we think about previous experiences, we choose to navigate the here and now differently. Take a moment and think about how God has provided for you, protected you, and remained present with you through your toughest seasons. Doesn’t it fill you with gratitude? You make wiser decisions in the here and now because you remembered how He made ways before. You embrace peace because gratitude has calmed the anxiety of your heart and mind. Today, we’re focusing our minds on remembering the maker of heaven and earth, our Heavenly Father, the only true and living God.

Reflect – How can you cultivate a daily practice of remembrance? In your own words, Pray that God calls to mind all the ways that He has moved in and through your life…

Advent Reflections – Even in the Waiting – Day 2

I have been lost a time or two. Usually, because I got distracted and wandered off the intended path. Whatever sparked my interest was enough to cause me to lose sight of my intended destination. In this passage, we find Jesus as a child, so focused on His Father’s business that he wanders off from his parents. In my own life, I’ve found that I’m not prone to wander towards my father’s business….but away from it.
