For a child will be born for us, a son will be given to us, and the government will be on his shoulders. He will be named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace.
Isaiah 9:6 CSB
Mighty God – גִּבּ֔וֹרgib·bôrʹ אֵ֣לʾēlʹ
Wonderful Counselor. Mighty God. Eternal Father. Prince of Peace.
Jesus embodies each of these names and more. As we examine the Hebrew language, it adds richness to the meaning of Mighty God. Today, we’re going to do a deeper dive into the name of the Mighty God.
Let’s break down Mighty (גִּבּ֔וֹר gib·bôrʹ) and God (אֵ֣לʾēlʹ).
gib·bôrʹ – warrior, powerful, strong, hero, valiant
ʾēlʹ – God, highest, divine, heavenly
Our God is an all-powerful and mighty God, capable of doing anything and everything that He wills. His power is ultimately beyond our comprehension, but we can rest assured knowing that He is in control. We can be confident that no matter what happens in our lives, He is with us and protecting us from harm. His power gives us a sense of security and peace, but it also reminds us that we should strive to live our lives in a way that honors and pleases Him, for no one and nothing can stand against Him or His son, Jesus Christ.
Knowing what you know about mighty, take a look at Psalm 50:1-2.
The Mighty One, God the Lord,
Psalm 50:1-2 ESV
speaks and summons the earth
from the rising of the sun to its setting.
Out of Zion, the perfection of beauty,
God shines forth.
