He answered, “It is written: Man must not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.”
Matthew 4:4 CSB
We are more than just physical beings walking around aimlessly. We are spiritual beings of purpose that need spiritual food and direction. Here, in Matthew 4:4, Jesus references the Old Testament and teaches us a crucial part of the Christian walk.
He humbled you by letting you go hungry; then he gave you manna to eat, which you and your ancestors had not known, so that you might learn that man does not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord.
Deuteronomy 8:3 CSB
We were designed to live on every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord. Just like we sit down at a table to eat our ‘three square meals’ daily, we need to feed our spiritual bodies. But all too often Christians are spiritually malnourished. Why? Because we neglect the Bible. We sit in pews on Sunday and think that it is sufficient to fuel our Christian walk. But it’s not. There will be seasons when the devil is attacking you and you have to know more than some verse you saw posted on social media. You have to know what to do and how to fight back. James 1:22-25 says that we must be doers of the Word. How can you do what you do not know?
This is a reminder that we, too, can read the Bible for ourselves. We can ask the Holy Spirit to empower us, guide us, and show us revelations about who God is and how we should live. The veil is torn. Don’t waste your access to our Heavenly Father.
