This week I have been thinking about darkness. My This week I have been thinking about darkness. My biggest issue is not being able to see... How am I supposed to move through a space when it's pitch black? What's in front of me? What am I about to step on?

We have built our entire lives around electricity. Flip a switch, the whole room lights up. We never really have to sit in dark. So when we read a verse like Psalm 119:105, 'Your word is a lamp for my feet and a light on my path' I don't think we recognize the significance of what it is saying.

The psalmist is describing a small clay oil lamp that fits in the palm of your hand. That's a small vessel, so the light that it makes is just enough to see a few feet ahead. Enough to keep you from stepping into a hole or onto a snake.

Think about the closest thing we have. You're outside in the dark, and all you've got is your cell phone flashlight. That thing is not lighting up the whole yard. It's not going to show you the tree line. So what do you do? You point it down.... At your feet.

That's what the Word does. It shows you the next step. And if you want to see farther, you have to keep walking because the light moves with you.

Every day, we are literally walking out into a dark world and most of us are moving through it on borrowed light. On what somebody told us the Bible says. On the devotional we read, which is the fruit of somebody else's time in the Word. On the sermon. On a podcast...

And none of that is bad, but you cannot navigate a dark world by the glow of somebody else's lamp. When they turn a corner, you're standing in the dark again.

You can't inherit discernment from your favorite teacher.

You've got to pick the Word up for yourself.

This August, we are going 'Back to the Basics' because you're about to walk out into the dark and you need a light in your own hand.

So this weekend take time to reflect on what it would look like to stop borrowing light and pick up the lamp yourself?

Episode 76: Obedience Over Outcomes: When the Calling Is Unclear dropped Monday!

Here's what we are learning: Clarity is not the prerequisite for obedience. Obedience is the path to clarity (Proverbs 3:5-6). Your purpose is not a mystery.
Confession: I am not a ride-or-die. If you need s Confession: I am not a ride-or-die.

If you need someone to ride out, I am not the one. I have questions. Who, what, when, where, why, how… I need the details before I move. That's my wiring. Just ask my husband…😆 So when I tell you that God has been working on my obedience this month, please understand that this does not come naturally.

When God gives an instruction, my first instinct is to interrogate it. I want the whole plan before I take the first step, but that's not actually what He's asking for. He gives what you need to walk out what He's called you to do. What I’m finding is that He gives it while walking.

Which means the focus was never supposed to be on the who, what, when, where, and why. The focus is supposed to be on the ONE who gave the instruction.

We love to quote "obedience is better than sacrifice" (1 Samuel 15:22), but do we actually sit with what that means? Because I think we live in a culture that leans so hard into grace and mercy that we've let obedience fade into the background. We'll talk all day about how God loves us as we are. We get real quiet about the part where He still asks us to move when He says move.

And here's the part that convicted me most: The outcomes were never mine to carry. God is the one handling the outcome. My only job is obedience. That’s it. Not managing what happens after.

So here's the question I've been sitting with, and I want to share it with you exactly like it came to me:
Am I obeying because I love God, or am I obeying because I'm afraid of what might happen if I don't?

Fear-obedience is exhausting… it's strong-arming your way through instructions, waiting for the other shoe to drop. Love-obedience trusts the One who gave the word, even when He doesn't hand you the whole map.

Part of running unhindered is releasing the need to see the whole outcome before you'll take the next step.

So this weekend, I'm not asking God for more details. I'm asking Him to help me trust the Giver more than I need to understand the instruction.

What's one place where you're obeying out of fear instead of love?

Waiting on God When Your Dreams Feel Delayed This Waiting on God When Your Dreams Feel Delayed

We act like waiting is a problem to be solved or a We act like waiting is a problem to be solved or an inconvenience. We live in a world of same-day and instant everything, so waiting feels like something broken instead of divine. But the Lord has shown me that the waiting is doing something in me that instant answers never could.

That's because waiting exposes...

It exposes that you're not actually in control. It exposes pride. It exposes the desires you've decided you know better about than God does... You're just waiting for Him to catch up to your plan. It exposes whether you're actually ready for the backside of what you're asking for.

What I've realized is that: We pray for the dream, but we rarely pray for what comes along with it.

We ask for the marriage, but not the sanctifying work marriage requires (Hello, dying to self). We ask for the promotion, but not the pressure it demands (Hello, stress). We ask for the children, but not the patience it requires to steward the legacy (Hello, sleepless nights).

It's like when you were a kid and you got the toy you'd been begging for and you rip it open, only to find the batteries were not included. They never mention it on the front of the box. And you just assumed they'd be there. So now, you're digging through a junk drawer looking for double-A's, annoyed, because you didn't read the fine print. You just wanted the toy.

I think a lot of our dreams are like that. We want the gift. We didn't actually read what it requires to run. And waiting is where God lets us find that out before He hands it over.

So here's what I've been sitting with this week.... While you're waiting, what is it exposing in you???

Are you withholding your service to God because the answer hasn't come yet (meaning your obedience was condition on getting what you asked for)?

Is you gratitude thinner than it used to be? Are you thanking Him less because you're focused on what's missing instead of what's already here?

Is there pride under the waiting... (meaning you have a belief that you deserve this by now, that you've earned it, that God is running behind schedule)?

I just want to remind you that: #Waiting isn't Wasted. It's Exposing...
